Black Movie Soundtrack II

 The Academy will highlight the art of film music with three programs in August: the West Coast restoration premiere of “King of Jazz,” a tribute screening of “Purple Rain” with members of the cast and crew, and a live concert celebration of The Black Movie Soundtrack, featuring Oscar®-winning recording artist Common and guests.

Archival Revival - Inside the Academy Film Archive

The Academy celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Academy Film Archive with the screening series “Archival Revival – 25 years of the Academy Film Archive,” curated from the extensive, diverse collection of motion pictures that the archive has restored and preserved. The series, which runs from July 18 through September 12, will showcase a broad range of titles – musicals, documentaries, silent films, Pre-Code comedies, experimental films and horror classics.

The Academy’s Board of Governors approved Oscars® rules and campaign regulations for the 89th Academy Awards® at their most recent Board meeting (Tuesday night, 6/28).  The most significant changes affect the Los Angeles qualifying run required in most categories, and the New York qualifying run required in the Documentary Feature category.

The Academy and the ABC Television Network today announced key dates for the 89th Oscars®.  The Academy Awards® presentation will air live on ABC on Oscar® Sunday, February 26, 2017.

New Academy Oscars Class 2016

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 683 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures.  Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2016. New members 2016.

With Star Wars (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980) taking the world by force, 1982 was a year defined by anticipation for the third and (then) final chapter in the Star Wars saga. The film’s originally promoted title Revenge of the Jedi and its ultimate change to Return of the Jedi has always been of significance to fans. Advertising materials that bear the more aggressive Revenge title reveal how far along the film’s marketing cycle had come prior to George Lucas’ decision to replace it with Return. From posters and trailers to merchandising tie-ins, Revenge artifacts represent a compelling period in Star Wars history.

Boyz In the Hood

The Academy today announced its June slate of Los Angeles and New York programs: a “Boyz N the Hood” 25th anniversary celebration, a digital restoration premiere of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rebecca” and a 60th anniversary screening of the George Stevens epic “Giant.”  The events will be highlighted by onstage discussions with a wide range of special guests, including filmmakers John Singleton and Gregory Nava, novelist Walter Mosley, actress Elsa Cárdenas, and visual effects artist Rob Legato.
