Academy War Film Collection

“Since Pearl Harbor” (1943, Preserved by the Academy Film Archive)

One of the largest collections of World War II era short films held outside government archives, the Academy War Film Collection contains over 230 unique titles designed to educate, encourage, and inspire the home front. The collection includes rare 35mm nitrate prints of war shorts, most of which had not been seen by audiences in over 70 years. Many of these films were produced by Hollywood studios on behalf of the U.S. government; highlights from the collection include Academy Award-winning shorts like “The Battle of Midway” (1942), “War Department Report” (1943), and “The Last Bomb” (1945).

The film material at the Academy Film Archive is complemented by material in the Academy War Film Library files at the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library.
