In the Heat of the Night also won Academy Awards for Best Actor (Rod Steiger), Film Editing (Hal Ashby), Sound (Samuel Goldwyn Studio Sound Department), and Writing – Screenplay based on material from another medium (Stirling Silliphant).
In the Heat of the Night was the first film in the detective genre to be honored as Best Picture by Academy voters.
