Award-winning star of stage and screen Neil Patrick Harris will host the 87th Oscars®, show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced today.  This will be Harris’ first time hosting the ceremony.   The show will air live on ABC on Oscar® Sunday, February 22, 2015.

If you’re an Oscars fan, a great place to start is with our brand new Oscars Timeline featuring videos and photos from each of the 86 ceremonies including Roberto Benigni's exuberant walk to the podium and Sally Field’s incredibly likable acceptance speech.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the New York University Orphan Film Symposium will present this year’s installment of “The Real Indies: A Close Look At Orphan Films,” a two-day screening series on Friday, October 31, and Saturday, November 1, at the Academy Theater in New York City.  The series serves as an opportunity to re-discover and re-appreciate orphan films – rarely seen, previously neglected cinematic works deserving preservation and revival.

The 86th Academy Awards

A record 83 countries have submitted films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category for the 87th Academy Awards®.  Kosovo, Malta, Mauritania and Panama are first-time entrants.

The Academy today introduced the newly redesigned Oscars.org, featuring unprecedented access to its members, collections and exclusive content, including the definitive Oscars® timeline." This site is an extension of our ongoing efforts to inspire, educate and entertain fans worldwide," said Chief Marketing Officer Christina Kounelias.  "Built on decades of history, expertise and passion for film, it’s a site that only the Academy could create." The site features a sleek, mobile-friendly design with social media integrated prominently throughout, encouraging fans to be a part of the conversation, share their passion and connect with other movie fans around the world. Other features include a dynamic visual showcase of the Academy’s vast collections from its library and archive, 50,000 photos and videos including 86 years of Oscars highlights, and a vibrant events section that allows fans the chance to experience Academy events and programming first-hand.  The previous site was built in 2008.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hosted a private luncheon and viewing of the current exhibition, Hollywood Costume,on Wednesday, October 8, at the Wilshire May Company building—future home of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. The luncheon was hosted by Academy Governor Annette Bening, Crystal Lourd, Oscar®-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Elizabeth Wiatt.

2014 Academy Nicholl Fellowships

Three individual writers and one writing team have been selected as winners of the 2014 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition.  Each individual winner and the combined writing team will receive a $35,000 prize, the first installment of which will be distributed at an awards presentation on Thursday, November 13, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.  For the second consecutive year, the event will also feature a live read of selected scenes from the fellows’ winning scripts by members of the Academy.

John Bailey, Gale Anne Hurd, John Knoll and Michael Tronick have accepted invitations to join the Science and Technology Council of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, bringing the Council's 2014–2015 membership roster to 25. 

A Hollywood Costume-related film series, Haunted Screens: Expressionism in the German Cinema and its Influence and the latest installment of the Academy Film Scholars Lectures highlight the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ fall programming season, starting next month.
