Academy Invites 271 to Membership

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 271 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2014.

Composers Gustavo Dudamel, Gustavo Santaolalla and John Williams will gather at the Academy for “Behind the Score: The Art of the Film Composer,” on Monday, July 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bing Theater in Los Angeles.  In a conversation hosted by Tavis Smiley, the illustrious trio will discuss significant musical moments in film that have inspired their work as they examine the art and process of creating a film score as well as the director-composer collaboration.

The dates are as follows:

Scientific and Technical Awards Friday, July 11
Documentary Short Subject Tuesday, September 2
Documentary Feature Monday, September 22
Animated Short Film Wednesday, October 1
Live Action Short Film Wednesday, October 1
Foreign Language Film Wednesday, October 1

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present “Movies in Your Brain: The Science of Cinematic Perception,” a two-night event on Tuesday, July 29, and Wednesday, July 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. Actor-director Jon Favreau (“Iron Man 2), Oscar-nominated director Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan”), and neuroscientist and screenwriter Ari Handel (“Noah”) will be joined by esteemed cognitive scientists from around the world for a program exploring how experiments in cinematic perception have advanced our understanding of the human brain.

"The Academy Announces Major Gifts from Dolby® Laboratories and the Dolby Family"

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that it has received a $7 million gift from Dolby Laboratories to provide cutting-edge audiovisual technology in the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures' movie theaters. Additionally, the Dolby family has made a $5 million gift to the Academy Museum's capital campaign. In recognition of this gift, the Academy will name the Museum's rooftop terrace the Dolby Family Terrace. 

The Academy Elects 2014–15 Board Of Governors

Five first-time governors have been elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors.  In addition, eight incumbents have been reelected and four previous governors are returning to the Board.

The first-time governors are Kate Amend, Documentary Branch; Daniel R. Fellman, Executives Branch; Albert Berger, Producers Branch; Bob Rogers, Short Films and Feature Animation Branch; and Mark Mangini, Sound Branch.

Actors Beau Bridges and Jeff Bridges will share the stage at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ “Beau and Jeff: A Tale of Two Bridges,” on Monday, August 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bing Theater in Los Angeles.  In a conversation about their long and remarkable careers, including that of their father Lloyd, the siblings will select clips from each other’s work and discuss the legacy of a legendary Hollywood dynasty.
