The Academy celebrates the 45th anniversary of the 1971 Best Picture winner, “The French Connection,” on Friday, October 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Immediately after the screening, Oscar®-winning screenwriter Chris McQuarrie will host an onstage conversation with the film’s Oscar-winning director, William Friedkin.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tonight honored 17 student winners from colleges and universities around the world at the 43rd Student Academy Awards® ceremony, held at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Actors Joel Edgerton, Lucy Liu, Daisy Ridley and Parker Sawyers will be presenters at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 43rd Student Academy Awards® on Thursday, September 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.  The awards ceremony caps a week of industry activities for the 17 winning student filmmakers from the U.S. and abroad.

ACADEMY REVEALS NICHOLL SCREENWRITING SHORTLIST

Eleven individual screenwriters and one writing team have been shortlisted for the 2016 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting.  The Academy Nicholl Fellowships Committee will meet later this month to select up to five winners to receive year-long fellowships.  A total of 6,915 scripts were submitted for this year’s competition. 

The shortlisted writers are (listed alphabetically):

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Tuesday night (August 30) to present Honorary Awards to actor Jackie Chan, film editor Anne V. Coates, casting director Lynn Stalmaster and documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman.  The four Oscar® statuettes will be presented at the Academy’s 8th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday, November 12, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center®.

ABC SIGNS EXPANSIVE NEW AGREEMENT TO BROADCAST THE OSCARS®, HOLLYWOOD’S BIGGEST ENTERTAINMENT CEREMONY, THROUGH 2028

ABC and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that they have expanded their agreement for eight more years, in which the Network will remain home to the Oscars®, Hollywood’s biggest entertainment ceremony of the year, through 2028. The new agreement for the domestic network of the Academy Awards® adds eight years to the existing contract, which was scheduled to expire in 2020. 

12 SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL AREAS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR 2016 OSCARS

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that 12 distinct scientific and technical investigations have been launched for the 2016 Oscars.

These investigations are made public so individuals and companies with devices or claims of innovation within these areas will have the opportunity to submit achievements for review.

STATEMENT REGARDING THE PASSING OF FORMER ACADEMY PRESIDENT ARTHUR HILLER

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved friend Arthur Hiller,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs.  “I was a member of the Board during his presidency and fortunate enough to witness firsthand his dedication to the Academy and his lifelong passion for visual storytelling.  Our condolences go out to his loved ones.”
 
A native of Canada, Hiller enjoyed a motion picture career that spanned five decades.
