Since 1973, the Academy has presented Student Academy Awards in Alternative, Animation, Documentary and Narrative categories. In 1981, a category was added to recognize student films from outside the U.S. To date, the Academy has honored more than 300 student films, and the Academy Film Archive has holdings on over 90% of those works. While most of those holdings are access copies, many filmmakers have also deposited master materials utilized in production. In addition to the films themselves, the Archive also has full video recordings of every Student Academy Awards ceremony since 1995, as well as footage from several other ceremonies dating as far back as 1976. Beginning with the fifth ceremony in 1978, the Academy has produced a compilation of each year’s Gold Medal award-winning films, which is then circulated free of charge to educational and nonprofit organizations nationwide. The Archive has also collected regional finalist films since 2006. Media formats in this collection have been largely dictated by the competition’s submission requirements (16mm film and Digital Betacam for older titles, and HDCAM and digital files for newer ones).
