“Soft Fiction” (1979)

Mildred "Chick" Strand was a pioneer in avant-garde cinema, most prominently between the 1960s and 1980s. She was most well-known for blending together experimental film techniques with ethnographic cinema. Her work often featured optical special effects and impressionistic imagery specifically through the use of 16mm film. The Archive has preserved several of Strand's films, including "Angel Blue Sweet Wings" (1966), "Anselmo" (1967), and "Soft Fiction" (1979). Since 2007 the Archive has housed 350 items related to Chick Strand, including elements on deposit through her estate and elements made from preservation work.
