Barbara Kopple’s solo directorial debut, the documentary “Harlan County, U.S.A.” (1976), profiles the 1973 Brookside coal miner’s strike in Kentucky. The film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1976 and was later named to the National Film Registry in 1990. The collection came to the Film Archive in 2011 and consists of original and printing elements for “Harlan County, U.S.A.” The Academy Film Archive preserved this title in 2004.
