The Whitney Collection encompasses the work of computer animation pioneer John Whitney, and his brother, James Whitney, a master in the field of abstract cinema, as well as works by John's three sons, Mark, John, and Michael. The collection was deposited by the family in 1995 and includes classic titles in computer animation and visual music, such as "Five Film Exercises" (1943-44), "Yantra" (1957), “Lapis” (1966), and “Arabesque” (1975), as well as tests, experiments, and commercials. More than 3,000 items are in the collection, the bulk of which is original 16mm film elements. To date, the Archive has preserved over a dozen of the films from the Whitney Collection.
