The collection of artist Pat O’Neill arrived at the Archive in April of 2005. The collection spans O’Neill’s full filmographic output, including 16mm and 35mm original picture and track elements, intermediate printing materials, and prints; totaling approximately 130 individual objects. Pat O’Neill is widely considered one of the most influential film artists in the history of Los Angeles independent / experimental cinema. Graduating with an MFA in Graphic Design and Photography from UCLA in 1964, O’Neill produced 20 pioneering and award-winning experimental films and installation works before transitioning to digital media in the 2000s. His work, though diverse and nearly uncategorizable, is often characterized by an advanced and singular use of optical compositing techniques to create powerful and unusual collages of image and sound.
