The Academy Museum is partnering with the Getty Research Institute’s Art on Screen on a series of public programs that bring together renowned filmmakers, artists, and scholars to explore aspects of contemporary visual culture. The first programs in the series will focus on two groundbreaking directors: Guillermo del Toro and Hou Hsiao-hsien.

Federico Fellini received Oscar nominations for Directing and Original Screenplay for Amarcord, his visually dazzling autobiographical fantasia that won the 1974 Foreign Language Film Oscar for Italy. Recalling the writer-director’s youth in the Adriatic city of Rimini before the Second World War, Amarcord (“I remember”) follows the picaresque adventures of a teenage boy whose obsession with sex distracts him from the rise of fascism. Fellini’s bawdy homage to adolescence features colorful, dreamlike imagery courtesy of cinematographer Giuseppe Rotunno and designer Danilo Donati, and benefits from the jubilant score of his usual composer, Nino Rota. A commercial and critical success at the time of its release, Amarcord  remains one of the filmmaker’s most beloved works, screened here in a 35mm print.

1973, color, 35mm, 123 minutes | Directed by Federico Fellini, written by Fellini and Tonino Guerra; with Pupella Maggio, Armando Brancia, Magali Noël, Ciccio Ingrassia, Nando Orfei, Luigi Rossi and Bruno Zanin
